A Jazz tax certificate is a yearly statement showing how much advance income tax Jazz collected on your recharges and bills. You can download it free from the SIMOSA app (formerly Jazz World), through Jazz's official WhatsApp service at 0300-3008000, or by USSD: *444# for prepaid and *446# for postpaid. Then enter it in your FBR return.
Last updated: September 2026. Tax rules and app menus change often, so check the official Jazz and FBR pages before you act.
Every time you top up your Jazz balance, a slice of that money goes to the tax authorities. Most people never see it. It quietly disappears into the "you loaded Rs. 500, but got less balance" gap.
Here is the good news. For many people, that money is not gone for good. It is advance tax, and you can often use it to reduce what you owe when you file your return. The proof you need is your Jazz tax certificate.
This guide walks you through everything. You will learn what the certificate is, how to download it, how to enter it in the FBR IRIS portal, and what to do when things go wrong. It is written in plain language, so you can follow it even if this is your first tax return.
What Is a Jazz Tax Certificate (Withholding Tax Deduction Certificate)?
A Jazz tax certificate is a document issued by Jazz that records the advance income tax collected from your mobile number during a given tax year. You may also see it called:
- Jazz withholding tax certificate
- Jazz tax deduction certificate
- Jazz tax statement
- Jazz tax paid certificate
They all mean roughly the same thing. Jazz acts as a withholding agent. It collects tax on behalf of the Federal Board of Revenue and passes it on. The certificate is your receipt for that tax.
The certificate typically shows:
- Your Jazz mobile number
- The tax period (for example, Tax Year 2026)
- The total amount you loaded or paid
- The total tax collected
Tip: A tax certificate is not the same as a tax invoice. An invoice comes with a single purchase or bill. A certificate summarises the tax collected across a whole period.
Which Tax Is Being Collected?
The tax comes from Section 236 of the Income Tax Ordinance, 2001. It covers advance tax on telephone bills, prepaid cards, and the sale of units through electronic means. It also covers internet bills and prepaid internet cards.
If you want the bigger picture of how this law works, read our plain-English guide to the Income Tax Ordinance 2001.
Why Your Jazz Tax Certificate Matters
Many people skip this step, which is a costly mistake. Here is why the certificate deserves your attention.
1. It Can Reduce Your Tax Bill
Section 236 tax is generally treated as advance, adjustable tax. That means it counts as a credit against your final income tax for the year. If you have already paid tax through your mobile load, you may owe less when you file.
2. It May Lead to a Refund
Sometimes the tax deducted at source is larger than your final tax liability. In that case, you may be able to claim the difference as a refund. This is common for people with low or moderate incomes who use a lot of mobile data.
3. It Backs Up Your Return
FBR can ask you to explain any adjustment you claim. The certificate is your evidence. Keeping a clean PDF for each year saves you stress if a notice ever arrives.
4. It Helps Freelancers and Business Owners
If you earn from clients online, your phone and internet spend is part of your working life. A record of tax paid on it belongs in your file. Our guide on FBR tax planning for freelancers explains how to build that habit.
Who Needs a Jazz Tax Certificate?
You will likely want one if:
- You are a salaried person who files a return every year
- You are a freelancer, sole proprietor or business owner
- You are a member of an AOP or run a company with Jazz connections
- You are applying for a tax refund
- You are trying to become a filer and want to claim every adjustment you are entitled to
- You use a postpaid or prepaid Jazz SIM in your own name
If you do not file a return, the certificate is less useful. But it is still worth knowing about, because filing is the only way to actually use this tax credit. If you are not yet registered, start with our guide on how to become a tax filer in Pakistan.
What You Need Before You Start
Get these ready and the process takes only a few minutes:
- A Jazz SIM registered in your name. The certificate follows the CNIC on the SIM.
- Your Jazz mobile number (prepaid or postpaid).
- A working phone, since you will receive a code or message.
- An internet connection for the app or WhatsApp methods.
- Your CNIC and NTN for when you file your return later.
Do you still need an NTN? Our NTN registration service can help you get one, and you can also confirm an existing one with NTN verification.
How to Download Your Jazz Tax Certificate (Step by Step)
Jazz offers more than one route. Pick the one that suits your phone and comfort level.
Method 1: Download From the SIMOSA App (Formerly Jazz World)
This is the most popular method. In May 2024, Jazz relaunched its Jazz World app as SIMOSA. Many people still search for "Jazz World app tax certificate," so you may see both names online. They lead to the same place.
Follow these steps:
- Install the app from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store.
- Log in using your Jazz number and the verification code you receive.
- Open the menu or the Support section. On some versions the Tax Certificate tile sits on the home screen.
- Tap Tax Certificate.
- Select the year you need, such as Tax Year 2026 (1 July 2025 to 30 June 2026).
- Tap Download, and confirm with the code if the app asks.
- Save the PDF to your phone and back it up.
Good to know: Menu names shift between app versions. If you cannot find the option, look under Support, More, or Account.
Method 2: Get It on Jazz's Official WhatsApp
This is handy if you do not want to install another app.
- Save 0300-3008000 in your phone contacts. This is Jazz's WhatsApp self-service number.
- Open WhatsApp and send Hi to that contact.
- Read the menu that comes back.
- Choose the Tax Certificate option. Sources have reported different menu numbers over time, so choose by name, not by number.
- Follow the prompts, select the year, and wait for the file.
Important: Use WhatsApp on your Jazz number. Reports suggest the service may not work if your WhatsApp is registered on a different network's SIM.
Method 3: Use a USSD Code
No smartphone? No problem. This works on basic phones too.
- Prepaid users: dial *444# and follow the menu to Tax Certificate.
- Postpaid users: dial *446# and follow the menu to Tax Certificate.
Jazz has shown the prepaid route through My Account, then Tax Certificate, then the year. USSD menus change, so read each screen carefully.
Method 4: Jazz Helpline or a Jazz Experience Center
If the digital options fail, call the Jazz helpline at 111 (from your Jazz number) or visit a Jazz Experience Center or franchise with your original CNIC. Ask for the tax certificate for the year you need.
A more general point: the official Jazz website is the best place to confirm current channels. If any step in this guide no longer matches what you see, trust Jazz's own pages.
Is the Jazz Tax Certificate Free?
Yes. Jazz's self-service channels for the certificate are free to use. Standard data charges from your internet package may apply on the app or WhatsApp, so use Wi-Fi if you can.
If anyone asks you to pay for a "Jazz tax certificate," be careful. That is a warning sign.
How Much Tax Does Jazz Deduct on Recharge?
This is one of the most searched questions, so let's answer it clearly.
In short: Advance tax on mobile phone and internet loads under Section 236 is 15% for most users. Landline bills above Rs. 1,000 attract 10%.
Here is what that looks like in real life.
Example: You load Rs. 1,000 on a prepaid SIM. Depending on how the load is structured, tax comes out of the amount, so your usable balance is lower than Rs. 1,000. Over a full year, this adds up to a real figure.
Now imagine you spend Rs. 1,500 a month on load. That is Rs. 18,000 a year. At 15%, a large part of that is tax attributed to you. If your annual income tax is higher than that credit, the credit simply reduces what you pay. If your tax is lower, you may claim the extra back.
What About Filers vs Non-Filers?
Here you need to be careful, because sources disagree.
- Some sources say the 15% rate is the same for everyone.
- Others say non-filers who appear on public FBR lists may face a much higher rate of up to 75%.
I cannot confirm one definitive rule here. The safest step is to check the current rate schedule on the FBR website and confirm your status. You can read about how ATL status changes rates in our guide on filer vs non-filer tax rates in Pakistan.
Not sure if you are on the list? Use our guide to check your FBR Active Taxpayer List status. If something looks wrong, our ATL status check and fix service can help.

Common Problems and How to Fix Them
Things do not always go smoothly. Here are the issues people report most, with practical fixes.
"My Jazz tax certificate is not showing in the app"
- Update SIMOSA to the latest version.
- Log out and log in again.
- Make sure you are using the number registered on your CNIC.
- Try WhatsApp or USSD instead.
"I did not receive my certificate on WhatsApp"
- Confirm you are messaging 0300-3008000 exactly.
- Use WhatsApp on your Jazz number.
- Restart the chat with "Hi" and pick the Tax Certificate option again.
"The certificate shows zero or the wrong amount"
- Check that you picked the correct tax year.
- Check that the SIM is registered under your CNIC.
- Contact Jazz on 111 and ask for a correction, keeping a copy of your CNIC ready.
"The SIM is registered on someone else's CNIC"
The certificate follows the CNIC on the SIM. If the SIM belongs to a family member, the tax credit may belong to them, not you. Ask whether it can be claimed by the registered person or transferred to your own CNIC through proper SIM ownership procedures.
"I need certificates for earlier years"
Try selecting past years in SIMOSA. If they are not available, ask Jazz customer care or visit an Experience Center.
"I have several SIMs"
Download a certificate for each SIM. Then add each number as a separate line in your return, or follow the format your accountant recommends.
Jazz vs Zong vs Ufone vs Telenor: Do They All Issue Tax Certificates?
Section 236 applies to all mobile networks, so tax is collected on Zong, Ufone and Telenor loads too. Each company has its own way of issuing certificates. The steps above are only for Jazz.
If you use several networks, download a certificate from each one and keep them together. Every credit you can prove is money you may not need to pay again. Also note that other taxes can apply on devices. Our guide on the PTA tax on iPhones in Pakistan explains the phone-side costs, which are separate from load tax. The regulator behind those rules is the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority.
Tax Certificate vs Tax Invoice vs Tax Statement
These terms confuse many people, so here is a simple way to remember them.
Tax invoice: Comes with one bill or purchase. It shows the tax on that single transaction.
Tax certificate: A summary document from a withholding agent. It shows total tax collected over a period.
Tax statement: A general term. Jazz sometimes uses it to mean the same document as the certificate.
For your FBR return, the certificate or statement covering the full year is what you need.
Advance Tax vs Withholding Tax: What Is the Difference?
People use these terms as if they are the same. They are closely related.
- Withholding tax describes how tax is collected. Someone else deducts it before paying you, or collects it when you pay them.
- Advance tax describes what kind of tax it is. You pay part of your yearly tax early, and it counts toward your final bill.
Jazz collects tax under a withholding mechanism, and the tax is treated as advance tax. Real-World Examples
Example 1: The Salaried Employee in Islamabad
Ahmed earns a monthly salary and spends about Rs. 1,000 on mobile load each month. He downloads his certificate from SIMOSA, sees the tax total for the year, and adds it to his return. It slightly reduces the tax he owes on top of what his employer already deducted.
Example 2: The Freelancer in Lahore
Sana works with international clients and uses a lot of mobile data. Her annual load is much higher, so the tax credit is larger. She keeps a PDF each year and claims it every time she files. Freelancers like Sana often benefit from the Lahore tax services we offer.
Example 3: The Business Owner in Karachi
Bilal runs a small trading business with several company SIMs. He downloads certificates for every number and gives them to his accountant. If you run a business in the city, our Karachi tax services can help you organise them.
Where to Get Help in Islamabad, Karachi, Lahore, Multan and Other Cities
The download process is the same in every city, because it is digital. Local help matters when you need in-person support.
Islamabad and Rawalpindi: Visit a Jazz Experience Center or franchise with your original CNIC. For filing support, see our Islamabad tax services. You can also check tax payment verification on our guide to Excise and Taxation Islamabad.
Karachi: Jazz service points are spread across the city. For return filing and tax advice, see our Karachi page.
Lahore: Visit a Jazz franchise or use the digital methods. For filing help, visit our Lahore page.
Multan, Faisalabad, Peshawar, Quetta, Hyderabad and other cities: Use SIMOSA, WhatsApp or USSD first. If you need a visit, search for a nearby Jazz franchise. FBR regional offices can guide you on return filing, and our online services work from anywhere in Pakistan.
Local tip: Bring your original CNIC and the SIM whenever you visit a franchise. Without them, most agents cannot help.
