A new vehicle is registered with the Excise & Taxation Department of the province or territory where the owner resides. The dealer usually initiates the file, but the owner must appear for biometric verification, and the registration book or smart card issues after fees are paid. Can I transfer vehicle ownership without the seller?

How long does a vehicle ownership transfer take?

What happens if token tax has unpaid arrears during transfer?
The transfer cannot complete until outstanding token tax and penalties on the vehicle are cleared — arrears attach to the vehicle, not the owner. That is why we run a full dues check before any transfer paperwork begins.
Do I need new number plates after transferring ownership?
No. Plates stay with the vehicle across ownership changes within the same province. New plates apply when registering a brand-new vehicle, moving a vehicle permanently between provinces, or replacing damaged sets.
